    FRIDAY 03-FEB-2012

While we have been having a very mild winter, Alaska has not. According to Ken Clark, respected forecaster for the Western U.S., Alaska has had one of the coldest January’s on record. Some of the coldest low temperatures are: Fort Yukon: minus 66 on Jan. 31, Circle Hot Springs: minus 58 on Jan. 29, and Fort Greely: minus 50 on Jan. 29.  So today for us, that EPAC ridge continues to amplify, bringing slightly above normal February temperatures and dry weather through the weekend and into Monday. On next Tuesday things get kinda interesting. A trof approaches the West Coast and encounters that ever persistent ridge. As it does it will split and struggle to reach the Sierra. However, splitting systems are most difficult to predict this far out, so there is some hope for a little moisture.  Stay tuned for updates.

    THURSDAY 02-FEB-2012

A weak disturbance tried to make it over the ridge last night and into today,  but nothing but wind.  An amplified ridge is now developing in the EPAC and it will bring fair weather to our forecast area through the weekend. Temps will run to seasonal norms or a bit higher. That ridge stay in power through Monday, then on Tuesday a system hits the ridge and splits. It may have enough punch to bring our district a slight chance of showers and upper level snow flurries. This not a big storm by any means, be we will take what we can get. Wednesday the ridge re-strengthens for dry weather through, what looks like, mid-February.

    FOR THE OWENS VALLEY:

Today: Mostly sunny and mostly clear in the evening. Highs 52 – 57 and lows 29 – 34. Winds NW 10 – 20 mph.

    WEDNESDAY 01-FEB -2012

Some mid and high levels clouds today with breezy conditions, as a weak system pushes through Northern California. This is not a weather maker, but Mono County might pickup a flurrie or two. High pressure then re-amplifies on Thursday, with dry and warming conditions through the weekend. By Tuesday of next week, there is a slight chance of a little precipitation, as another weak system tries its best to ride the ridge. Once again this doesn’t look like a real weather maker. So stay tuned for updates on the possibility of this rare precipitation event.

    FOR THE OWENS VALLEY:

Today: Mostly sunny with mostly clear skies at night. Highs 56 and lows 29. Winds NW 5- 15 mph G 25.

    TUESDAY 31-JAN-2012

Well, here we are in the last day of January 2012. Many of you have ask me, when will this drought end. The answer is not soon. The forecast models, as of this morning, are saying well below normal precipitation in California and Nevada through the 8th/9th of February. Thats the second week in February! What we have in effect, is a strong blocking ridge of high pressure (a Rex Block) dominating the West Coast, and any storms that hit it are being sheered apart or pushed to the north. Now can these forecast models be incorrect, of course. But if you look at the overall weather pattern so far this winter, those models are looking pretty good. So, dry weather through the weekend with slightly cooler temperatures and some clouds overhead.

    FOR THE OWENS VALLEY:

Today: Mostly sunny then a few clouds in the evening. Highs 54 – 59 and lows 34 – 39. Winds N 10 mph.
    Wednesday: Partly sunny skies and partly cloudy at night. Highs 53 – 58 and lows 33 – 38. Winds W 7 – 11 mph.

FOR THE TOWN OF MAMMOTH LAKES:

Today: Mostly sunny then partly cloudy through the evening. Highs 45 and lows 27. Winds N 5 mph.
Wednesday: Mostly sunny then partly cloudy in  the evening. Highs 41 and lows 25. Winds S 5- 10 mph.

    FOR MONO COUNTY:

    Today: Partly cloudy.  Highs 44 – 49 and lows 18 – 28. Winds N 10 mph.
Wednesday: Partly cloudy then mostly cloudy in the afternoon and evening. Highs 42  – 52 and lows 12 – 22. Winds SW 10 – 15 mph.

    MONDAY 30-JAN-2012

As the ridge off the West Coast remains firm, a few weak cold fronts will move over its top this week. This will  bring in a little cooler air and come clouds. The chances of precipitation look nil. The ridge actually amplifies mid week (spreading as far as NW Canada) and this will bring a continuation of dry weather through this weekend. This blocking ridge will shear apart any system that runs into it. Right the long range forecast models are saying below normal precipitation for the first 7 days of February.

    FOR THE OWENS VALLEY:

Today: Partly sunny today and partly cloudy tonight. Highs around 57 and lows 26. Winds NW 5 mph.
Tuesday: Mostly sunny then partly cloudy in the evening.  Highs 54 and lows around 25. Winds NW 5  - 10 mph.

FOR THE TOWN OF MAMMOTH LAKES:

Today: Partly sunny then partly cloudy tonight. Highs around 40 and lows 27. Winds W 5 mph.
Tuesday: Mostly sunny becoming partly cloudy at night.  Highs 40 and lows 25. Winds W 5 – 10 mph.

    FOR MONO COUNTY:

Today: Partly to mostly cloudy day and evening. Highs 43 – 48 and lows 18 – 23. Winds SW 10 mph.
Tuesday: Partly cloudy through the day and evening. Highs 40 – 45 and lows 14 – 24. Winds W 10 mph.
