FORECAST: The Owens Valley, Mammoth and Mono County

SATURDAY 03-MAR-2012

We are sandwiched between strong high pressure off the coast and a ridge over the Great Basin. This will create warm early March temps, light winds and clear skies through Monday. Highs by Monday will be in the mid 70s for the Owens Valley and the mid 50s for Mammoth. Then Tuesday and Wednesday a trough moves through the district. This will have limited moisture, but will make up for that with cool temps and windy conditions (much like the storm last Wednesday). By Thursday, high pressure re-builds for another warming trend thru the weekend.

Hi Dennis, I’m glad to hear that you have faith in the Kestrel. It seems like a good instrument to me for what it is. it was with the local micro climates in mind that I made my comment rather than to attack the accuracy of forecasting. Its a crazy valley that we live in. Last fall when we got out first light freeze, early/mid Oct I think, the forecast low in Bishop was 41F. We’re on our third season growing at this location and we’re learning that this is not Wilkerson. The hots are hotter and the colds are colder. Maybe there’s some down canyon flow from the palisades or something but we do seem to get the extremes.
Really appreciate your forecasts, they’re so much more readable to a layman like myself that some other local “gurus”. Cheers,,,,,

Steven: I am quite familiar with your Kestrel 3500, quite accurate for a hand held. The variation in climate here in the Owens Valley is almost unthinkable. There are some many micro climates here that variations in temp, wind speed, and wind direction are literally a few meters apart. I’ve spent 10 years here analyzing this phenomena for the EPA. Thanks for your input.

FYI. This was just south of Big Pine. For some reason its always hotter here in the summer and colder in the winter. We grow veggies so we read your forecast pretty much every day.
