TUESDAY July 31, 2012

A strong ridge of high pressure, currently over the Texas Panhandle, will bring mostly sunny skies and slightly above normal temperatures through the workweek. Just about what you would expect for the last day of July into the first part of August. Shortwave energy rotating around the ridge will help direct some monsoonal moisture closer to our area, by end of week and into the weekend. More on this later.

Today: Mostly sunny. Highs 98 / lows 57. Winds SE 6 – 8 mph.
Wednesday: Mostly sunny. Highs 97 / lows 58. Winds SE 5 – 10 mph.

MONDAY July 30, 2012

High pressure dominates our area. So a slow warming trend thru mid week then temps level off by end of work week. By Friday and Saturday, it looks like some monsoonal moisture will make its return to our district, giving us a chance of showers and thunderstorms then. More on this in a later forecast.

For the Owens Valley:

Today: Sunny. Highs 97 / lows 58. Winds SE 5 – 10 mph.
Tuesday: Mostly sunny. Highs 96 / lows 59. Winds NE 6 – 8 mph.

SUNDAY July 29, 2012

As mentioned in my forecast yesterday, We have had a rather poor thunderstorm season so far (in fact for the last few years) so I have doubts about the forecast models (ECMWF / GFS) accuracy at this time.” Sure enough, the models have taken a complete “flip-flop” and now bring NO moisture into our district this upcoming week. So, dry and warm conditions through Friday with temps running in the upper 90s/100s for the Owens Valley and 82 – 92 for Mono County. Having said all this, I am still holding on to a slight possibility of a T-Storm or two along the Crest Tuesday or Wednesday.

2:32 pm update: Much wobbling by the forecast models on the extent of moisture to move into our are this week. Have decided to wait for another model run before making a final determination. Will have this in my Monday forecast.  For you hikers and climbers, this will be an important forecast one way or the other.

SATURDAY July 28, 2012

Nice weather thru the weekend with temps about normal for late July. By Monday a large area of high pressure will begin to migrate westward from its current position over Northern Mexico. As it does, it brings with it a slug of moisture from that area into ours. So a chance of showers and T-Storms starts on Tuesday and persists into Thursday. We have had a rather poor thunderstorm season so far (in fact for the last few years) so I have doubts about the forecast models (ECMWF / GFS) accuracy at this time. Stay tuned more updates.

FRIDAY July 27, 2012

A ridge of high pressure over 4-Corners and a trough off the PACNW coast combine to create a  dry SW flow over our area. Thus, temperatures will run at or slightly above normal with dry conditions over the weekend. By Monday, that ridge starts to migrate towards CA and this will create a SE flow. With that flow, moisture over Mexico and Arizona can slowly move into our district, giving us a chance of thunderstorms by about Tuesday into Thursday of next week. Stay tuned for updates.
